KAPTREK - MESHTASTIC - K-MESH - K-OEM

KAPTREK K-MESH & K-OEM: Meshtastic and MeshCore for Tactical Field Operations.

No network. No infrastructure. No compromise on security. That is the promise of KAPTREK’s K-MESH solution: a hardened LoRa mesh radio network, natively compatible with the open-source firmwares Meshtastic and MeshCore, designed to integrate seamlessly with the K-OEM tactical smartwatch and the K-VISOR supervision interface. A sovereign, ruggedized, field-deployable solution for armed forces, security forces, and any operational team working beyond network coverage.

What is Meshtastic — and why does it matter for defense?

Meshtastic is an open-source firmware that turns LoRa-capable devices into autonomous mesh networks, capable of transmitting GPS positions, text messages, and telemetry data without any pre-existing network infrastructure. Initially designed for hikers and radio enthusiasts, Meshtastic has been rapidly adopted by military communities, civil security, and crisis management teams for its robustness, low footprint, and highly active global community.

MeshCore is a complementary open-source alternative to Meshtastic, offering similar LoRa mesh capabilities with a slightly different protocol, oriented toward more structured client-server architectures. The K-MESH solution supports both protocols, providing maximum flexibility depending on the operational context.

The ISM 868 MHz band used in France and Europe offers key tactical advantages: low power consumption, solid penetration in urban and forested environments, and a signal that is significantly harder to detect or jam than conventional cellular or satellite communications.

Three antenna options to match operational needs: short rigid antenna (5 cm, 3 dBi), long flexible antenna (17 cm, 10 dBi) for maximum range, and fixed C2 relay antenna (28 cm, 5 dBi) for command post deployment.

Each beacon can operate as a terminal node (worn by an operator) or as a relay node (fixed antenna, vehicle, elevated position) to extend mesh network coverage. When an internet access point is available (4G/5G, Starlink), the K-MESH automatically switches to MQTT gateway mode, linking the field network to the K-VISOR supervision interface.

Native Meshtastic Integration: Collaborative Geolocation and Blue Force Tracking.

The Meshtastic integration in K-MESH is not a simple software port — it is native integration, validated on the open-source Meshtastic firmware embedded in K-MESH nodes. In practice, each beacon shares its GNSS position and the positions of connected EUDs (K-OEM smartwatches) in real time, delivering immediate Blue Force Tracking with zero pre-deployed infrastructure.

Key features of the Meshtastic integration in K-MESH:

Native collaborative geolocation — each network node shares and receives the positions of all other operators every 5 to 10 seconds. Up to 100 devices can coexist on a single mesh network.

Bidirectional text messaging — operators can exchange text messages directly between their K-OEM and other network nodes, including with the K-VISOR supervisor.

Point of Interest / Cursor on Target (POI/CoT) sharing — field markers, targets, threat positions, and rally points can be transmitted in standardized format across the entire network.

ATAK / CivTAK compatibility — via the Meshtastic plugin for ATAK (Android Team Awareness Kit), K-MESH network data is directly readable in ATAK and CivTAK command interfaces, enabling interoperability with existing BMS/C2 systems.

MeshCore compatibility — K-MESH also supports the MeshCore protocol, providing teams already operating with this infrastructure a direct gateway into the KAPTREK ecosystem.

AES-128 or AES-256 encrypted communications — all transmissions over the K-MESH network are encrypted to military standards, eliminating any interception risk for positions and messages.

Infrastructure-free deployment, 24-hour battery life — the network is operational within minutes, with no cell tower, no dedicated satellite link, and no dependency on a telecom operator.

K-OEM: the hardened Android smartwatch, field network hub.

The K-OEM is KAPTREK’s Android tactical smartwatch, designed to host third-party applications such as ATAK, Meshtastic apps, and any APK solution developed by a partner integrator. It forms the field interface between the operator and the K-MESH network.

Thanks to its Android ecosystem and Bluetooth/WiFi/USB connectivity to K-MESH beacons, the K-OEM allows each operator to view the operational map in real time with teammates’ positions, send messages, drop field markers, and interact directly with ATAK or Meshtastic apps.

The K-OEM is available in three software configurations: preloaded applications (turnkey solution), custom application development (bespoke APK), or partner co-integration platform (SDK open to third-party integrators).

K-VISOR: Secured C2 Supervision of the K-MESH Network

K-VISOR is the command and supervision interface for the K-MESH network. Accessible via web browser (Chrome recommended) on any standard or ruggedized PC (Getac, Toughbook…), it gives the supervisor full visibility over the entire field network.

K-VISOR Features:

Multi-mode mapping — satellite, road, dark tactical, terrain, and 3D views. Real-time display of all K-MESH beacon and connected K-OEM positions.

Bidirectional messaging — the supervisor can send and receive text messages with each individual operator or broadcast to the entire team simultaneously.

Beacon fleet management + network quality monitoring — dashboard showing the status of each K-MESH node: battery level, signal quality, connection status, active node count. Up to 100 simultaneous beacons, with the ability to manage multiple K-MESH networks in parallel.

Secured connection via MQTT TLS + AES-256 — field data is pushed to K-VISOR via TLS-encrypted MQTT with AES-256, hosted on sovereign servers located in France. No operational data transits through foreign cloud infrastructure.

Technical requirements: Windows 11, 16 GB RAM, Intel Core i7 recommended. French server hosting (local hosting option available on request).

Global Architecture: K-MESH + K-OEM + K-VISOR in an Operational Scenario.

The strength of the KAPTREK solution lies in the coherence of its system architecture. Here is how the three components interact in the field:

Each operator carries a K-MESH beacon on their equipment and wears a K-OEM smartwatch on their wrist. The beacon transmits GNSS positions and messages over LoRa 868 MHz, node to node, over a 2 km LOS range. The mesh network can scale up to 100 nodes, with relay nodes positioned at elevation (vehicle, building, drone) to extend coverage over larger areas.

As soon as an internet access point is available — whether a 4G/5G connection, a Starlink satellite link, or a tactical IP radio network — a K-MESH beacon configured as an MQTT gateway pushes all data to K-VISOR. Multiple teams operating in distinct geographical areas can thus be supervised simultaneously from a single command post.

This architecture directly supports JTAC, C-UAV, CBRN, and special forces use cases documented in the KAPTREK PRO PILOT specifications.

A Sovereign Solution in a Competitive Landscape.

In a context where the sovereignty of operational data is a non-negotiable requirement — particularly for European armed forces — the K-MESH + K-OEM + K-VISOR solution stands out through:

100% French development: hardware assembled in France, software developed in France, data hosted on sovereign French servers. No dependency on GAFAM or American or Asian cloud platforms.

Controlled open-source ecosystem: Meshtastic and MeshCore integration enables interoperability with a global community of users and developers, while retaining full control over encryption and data.

Complementarity with K-OS: for operations requiring maximum sovereignty, the Linux K-OS smartwatch (KAPTREK proprietary OS, minimal electromagnetic signature) can replace the Android K-OEM, providing enhanced operational discretion.

Conclusion: The Sovereign Field Network — Ready to Deploy Now.

The K-MESH + K-OEM + K-VISOR combination is a C2/C4ISR wearable solution that is immediately deployable, infrastructure-free, Meshtastic and MeshCore interoperable, AES-256 encrypted, and sovereign end-to-end. It meets the operational requirements of armed forces, security forces, CBRN teams, and any operational structure requiring reliable field communications beyond network coverage.

K-OEM development kits are available for integrators and partners wishing to develop their own APK applications on the KAPTREK platform.
